We are pleased to announce the transnational conference "Potentials for Territorial Co-operation with the Western Balkans" organised by the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning from Slovenia on 19 and 20 April 2010 in Maribor, Slovenia. The conference will discuss the following issues: what are the territorial development potentials of the region and how to release that potential?
Inconsistent development decisions frequently cause risks and unsustainable development. Different processes such as disparities in economic and social development, loss of vitality and quality in numerous mountain or rural areas, urban sprawl, more frequent occurrence of hazards accelerated by climate change, endangering human life and generating severe damage are challenging the sustainability of our common European future.
All European documents call for comprehensive approach to territorial, social and economic cohesion and a more regionally balanced and sustainable development which respects the quality, diversity and uniqueness of European territories. Comprehensive approach involves cooperation of various sectors of activity, various levels of authorities and stakeholders, ensuring widely acceptable solutions and better synergies in places and territories. Territorial impact of development cuts across national, regional, local or any other administratively delineated boundaries. Therefore trans-European co-operation is indispensable and should be widely enhanced and seen as an activity with far-reaching benefits.
Representatives of different stakeholders, administrative levels, networks, researchers, policy sectors, co-operation bodies, territorial co-operation programmes will be invited for panel session to engage in a dialogue with the audience about the main common issues.
The objectives of the event are:
- Identifying needs for cooperation based on territorial potentials, assets, comparative advantages, and identified weaknesses of regions;
- Enhancing exchange of experience and knowledge among actors and stakeholders;
- Generating innovative proposals of actions for drawing on the identified potentials of our territories;
- Stimulating concrete and innovative proposals for future co-operation activities and identifying different forms of cooperation.
